How does a Clinical Exercise Physiologist differ from a Personal Trainer?
Clinical Exercise Physiologists focus on the evidence regarding exercise prescription and possess the knowledge, skills and experience in clinical exercise delivery and health behavior modification for people with clinical conditions or impairments. Clinical Exercise Physiologists, compared to Personal Trainers, possess extensive knowledge of the patients pathophysiology and medications, how this may effect their daily activities and what co-morbidities may exist with their medical conditions and identify potential contraindications to exercise. Furthermore, CEP's are trained to educate the client on how to overcome barriers to exercise and manage adherence to an active lifestyle. (ESSA, 2012).
